A safe toy is an object held by the sub; dropping it signals a need to stop play. It's most commonly used when the sub is gagged and cannot speak easily, but it can also be useful with a sub who tends to get so lost in subspace that s/he forgets to safe word. A sub that far out of it will often drop the toy

The most common safeword I've heard from models and subs is "red". I had one girl who during a shoot where she was gagged used the first bars of Beethovens fifth. I use "lobster" myself.

When speaking is possible "stop" and "easy" work well enough to cease activity or ease down the action, respectively. Otherwise safety measures vary from scenario to scenario, testing whatever seems to work in a given situation.
