Ceilidh, perhaps you can pitch forced workouts to your husband as part of a training routine. Get him used to ordering you to work out, and then see if you can expand it to orders for other things. There really is no substitute for regular cardio workout in terms of weight loss. I struggled with exercising regularly for a long time, but eventually I found a trainer and told him that i needed something that would give me some sort of evidence of progress within 3 months. I figured I could commit to 12 weeks. If I saw progress after 12 weeks, I could use that progress to motivate me to keep going and try a little harder. Well before 12 weeks I had started to lose weight, although it was probably 12 weeks before I could actually see the change. And that showed me that what I was doing was working, so I was able to keep going. Since Jan 09, I've dropped from a size 40 pant to a size 34, and I can fit into a 32 but it's a snug. I've dropped from an extra large shirt to a large, and sometimes I can fit into a medium. I still have a little belly flab, but I'm just now starting to see a hint of definition in my abs. I focused on losing 5 lbs at a time, because losing 5 lbs was way easier than losing 50 lbs. And now exercise has become a regular habit. Sometimes I struggle to get the motivation, but usually if I can't work out I'm a little unhappy. So if you want to lose the weight and get into better shape, you absolutely can do it. But it takes commitment.

I discovered last night, to my absolute horror, that the pot belly I have had since the age of 16 is not far off the same size as that of a woman 10 weeks pregnant  :(

I don't need to lose weight, I'm a shade under 9 stone (the average weight for women I think), no idea what that is in pounds or kilos though. But knowing what I know now, this belly has GOT to go

Sebastian, a PM is on its way to you.

I like your idea of forced workouts. :) I'm not sure how great hubby will go for it. Apparently he likes me just the way I am...I would like to be able to fit into his clothes...he has a frickin 28 in waist and can eat like a pro ball player. I can easily wear a large in mens. I do own a few mediums (but they are snug;) ) however in womens I am lucky if an XL will fit me. :( Maybe by next fall (once life settles down a bit - moving, fiding a house, jobs, fiting excersize into my life) I'll see about a trainer to help motivate me also...but then again, do I own a Wii Fit...

aww thank you OLP. I'm going to try and get some more tomorrow. I tried to take some up close photos of some, but the sun was setting and then the wind and rain decided to show up...And a raindrop nailed me right in the eye - behind my eye glasses!! I guess it doesn't help any considering I had ahold of a branch over my head , looking up, trying to take a photo. lol.

and HUH? a toothbrush to exfoliate cracked skin around your lips??

Yep, I saw it on a TV show and thought I'd try it, as my lips are really bad (shred the skin off them due to stress) and it did work, my lips were loads softer after :)

Aww, I imagine your pics would have looked lovely in the sunset :) My living room window looks out onto a mountain, and last night as the sun was starting to set, the top of the mountain was lit up in orange...it looked amazing, I will have to try and take some pics of it sometime as the weather improves :)
