Handcuff, if hospitals scare you that much, my advice would be to do some therapy with a counselor. Almost everyone has to spend time in a hospital at some point in their lives, and being that distressed while doing so could affect your recovery. It may also make you avoid the hospital in situations where you need it. But obviously that doesn't help you right now.
With things that scare me, my philosophy has always been that being afraid is not a good reason to not do something. Flying makes me very nervous, but I realized years ago that if I let my fear keep me off of planes, I would not be able to do many things that I want to do. So when I get worried about flying I just say "So what? You've got to fly." And gradually over the years, my anxiety about flying has diminished.
Perhaps your wife/mistress can help you through this by ordering you to be strong. Sort of use your instincts to obey her to help you manage your fear. You trust her not to harm you, so maybe using her as your 'higher power' here will help. Just a thought.
Having a tonsilectomy as an adult is pretty rough procedure, but it doesn't require a long hospital stay, just a great deal of bed rest at home. I had a friend who had one about three years ago. She was home the day after the surgery, but couldn't go back to work for two weeks. So plan accordingly.
