Princess Waltz boasts a fairly sizable cast of memorable characters. Many of them fall into the standard eroge archtypes (Older sister, aggressive red-head, spunky blonde), but the developers have managed to give each heroine their own distinct flavor. Almost everyone has a secret to hide, and the fun part is finding out more about these lovely ladies.
The battles in Princess Waltz are played out through a series of card games, with the flash and clang of steel being pleasantly represented by short animations.
It's a standard card battle formula. Players draw their hand and apply their cards to both an attack and a defense phase. The trick is to balance your cards so that you have just enough attack points to overpower your opponent's defense, but are still left with enough to counter their own strike.
Some RPG elements are added to the mix as well, influencing the way you face certain opponents as the game progresses.
The plot is well developed, though it may drag a bit for some that are just in it for the sex. It even has a few pleasant plot twists worked in. (Though you'll see the first one coming from a mile off.)
The story takes place over several months of Arata's life, offering a nice slice-of-life look at normal, everyday Japan when the monsters aren't busy tearing holes in it.
Of course, there's a perfectly rational reason why Arata needs to have sex with every single lady. It's a bit silly, but it works in context.
