In January of 1836 the early saints dedicated the first latter-day temple in Kirtland, Ohio. Shortly after dedication, Joseph Smith took young men into private initiatory rooms inside the temple. There he instructed each man to remove his clothing and step into a large basin so he could wash and anoint their bodies, as had been done in Solomon's Temple.
