Start with a modest size butt plug and graduallt train yourself to take larger ones. Plugs should basically feel comfortable after you get used to them. Any significant anal pain is a sign that there's a problem and the toy should come out. Anal play should not hurt ever. You may have some mild discomfort when you first start, but it shouldn't last; if it does, you're not using enough lube or doing something else wrong.

And never forget that lube is always good. Don't be afraid to use it.
If it's discomforting at first, then start small and work up slowly. Don't try to take it too quick, go for as much as you think you can take, and then let yourself get used to it.
